## Types of Disconnect Switches
### Fused Pullout Disconnects
Most common for residential AC.
**Features:**
- Pull-out fuse block
- Removable for service lockout
- Fuses provide overcurrent protection
- NEMA 3R outdoor rated
- Knockout for conduit
**Advantages:**
- Provides circuit protection
- Easy on/off operation
- Code compliant
- Economical
**Amp Ratings:**
- 30 amp (small AC units, 1-2 ton)
- 60 amp (most residential, 2-5 ton)
### Non-Fused Disconnects
Switch only, no fuse protection.
**Features:**
- Pull-out switch block
- No fuses (rely on breaker)
- NEMA 3R rated
- Lower cost
**When to Use:**
- When breaker provides protection
- Where fuses not required
- Per local code
- Cost-sensitive applications
**Note:** Check local code - some areas require fused disconnects.
### Fused Safety Switches
Heavy-duty with knife blade disconnect.
**Features:**
- Enclosed knife switch
- Visible blade position
- Fuse clips inside
- Commercial/industrial
- Various NEMA ratings
**Applications:**
- Commercial HVAC
- Industrial equipment
- Heavy-duty applications
- Where high visibility needed
## Disconnect Sizing
### How to Size:
1. **Find Equipment Amperage**
- Look at condenser data plate
- Find MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity)
- Find MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protection)
2. **Select Disconnect Rating**
- Disconnect amp rating ≥ MCA
- Fuse rating ≤ MOCP
- Common: 30A or 60A
### Common Sizing:
| AC Tonnage | Typical MCA | Disconnect Size |
|------------|-------------|-----------------|
| 1-1.5 ton | 10-15A | 30A disconnect |
| 2-2.5 ton | 15-20A | 30A or 60A |
| 3 ton | 18-22A | 60A disconnect |
| 3.5-4 ton | 20-28A | 60A disconnect |
| 5 ton | 25-35A | 60A disconnect |
## Disconnect Installation
### Location Requirements:
**NEC Code:**
- Within sight of equipment
- Maximum 50 feet away
- Lockable (or within sight)
- Accessible for service
**Best Practices:**
- Close to condenser (3-6 feet)
- Away from exhaust airflow
- Accessible height
- Protected from damage
### Installation Steps:
1. **Turn Off Power**
- Main breaker off
- Verify no voltage
2. **Mount Enclosure**
- Level on wall
- Proper height
- Secure mounting
3. **Run Conduit**
- Line side (from breaker)
- Load side (to condenser)
- Proper fittings
4. **Wire Connections**
- Line to top terminals
- Load to bottom terminals
- Ground properly
- Torque to spec
5. **Install Fuses**
- Correct amp rating
- Per equipment MOCP
- Both legs
6. **Test Operation**
- Pull out = power off
- Insert = power on
- Verify with meter
## Disconnect FAQs
**Q: Fused or non-fused?**
A: Check local code. Fused provides additional protection. Non-fused relies on breaker only.
**Q: What size do I need?**
A: Check equipment data plate for MCA. Disconnect must equal or exceed MCA.
**Q: What fuse size?**
A: Check equipment MOCP. Fuse must not exceed MOCP rating.
**Q: Can I use breaker instead of disconnect?**
A: Only if breaker is within sight (50 feet) of equipment. Otherwise need local disconnect.
**Q: Why does my disconnect get hot?**
A: Loose connections, undersized wire, corroded contacts, or overloaded circuit. Investigate immediately.
