## Types of HVAC Fuses

### Blade Fuses (Automotive Style)
Common in modern HVAC equipment.

**Features:**
- ATC/ATO style
- Color-coded by rating
- Easy to inspect (see-through)
- Push-in installation

**Common HVAC Ratings:**
- 3 amp (violet) - Control circuits
- 5 amp (tan) - Control circuits
- 7.5 amp (brown) - Low voltage
- 10 amp (red) - Medium loads
- 15 amp (blue) - Higher loads
- 20 amp (yellow) - Heavy loads

**Applications:**
- Modern furnace control boards
- Air handler controls
- Thermostat circuits
- Low voltage protection

### Glass Tube Fuses
Traditional cylindrical fuses.

**Features:**
- Glass body (visible element)
- Metal end caps
- Fast-acting or slow-blow
- 1/4" x 1-1/4" common size

**Types:**
- **AGC** - Fast-acting glass
- **MDL** - Time-delay (slow-blow)
- **ABC** - Ceramic slow-blow

**Applications:**
- Older control boards
- Transformers
- Various electronics
- 24V circuits

### Cartridge Fuses
Heavy-duty protection.

**Features:**
- Ceramic or fiber body
- Higher voltage/current ratings
- Ferrule or knife blade ends
- Time-delay available

**Applications:**
- Equipment disconnect
- Main circuit protection
- Higher amperage circuits
- Commercial equipment

### Time-Delay (Slow-Blow) Fuses
Handle momentary surges.

**Features:**
- Withstands brief overloads
- Allows motor starting inrush
- Opens on sustained overload
- "SLO-BLO" or "T" designation

**When to Use:**
- Motor circuits
- Transformer primary
- Any circuit with inrush current
- Prevents nuisance blowing

### Fast-Acting Fuses
Immediate protection.

**Features:**
- Opens instantly on overload
- No delay time
- Sensitive circuit protection
- "F" designation

**When to Use:**
- Electronic circuits
- Control boards
- Sensitive equipment
- Where delay is dangerous

## Common HVAC Fuse Applications

### Control Board Fuses

**Typical:**
- 3 amp or 5 amp
- Blade or glass tube
- Protects 24V circuit
- Blows on thermostat short

**Location:**
- On control board
- Inline with transformer secondary
- May be in fuse holder

**Why They Blow:**
- Shorted thermostat wire
- Bad thermostat
- Control board failure
- Wiring problem

### Transformer Fuses

**Primary Side:**
- 120V or 240V
- Higher amp rating
- Cartridge or blade
- Protects transformer

**Secondary Side:**
- 24V typically
- Lower amp (3-5A)
- On board or inline
- Protects controls

### Disconnect Fuses

**Features:**
- Cartridge style
- Match equipment amperage
- In outdoor disconnect box
- Main circuit protection

**Sizing:**
- Match equipment MCA
- Don't exceed MOCP
- Check data plate

## Fuse Troubleshooting

### System Dead - Check Fuse:

1. **Locate Fuse**
   - Control board
   - Transformer
   - Disconnect box

2. **Visual Inspection**
   - Blown element visible?
   - Discolored?
   - Burned smell?

3. **Test with Meter**
   - Set to continuity
   - Test across fuse
   - Good fuse = continuity
   - Blown fuse = open

### Why Fuses Blow:

**Common Causes:**
- Shorted wiring (most common)
- Bad component
- Overloaded circuit
- Wrong fuse rating (too small)
- Component failure
- Lightning/surge

**Investigation Required:**
- Find why fuse blew
- Don't just replace
- Fix root cause
- Or it will blow again

### After Replacing Fuse:

**If Blows Again Immediately:**
- Direct short exists
- Find and repair short
- Check all wiring
- Test components

**If Works Then Blows Later:**
- Intermittent short
- Overload condition
- Marginal component
- Further diagnosis needed

## Fuse Selection

### Matching Specifications:

1. **Amp Rating**
   - Must match original
   - Never go higher
   - Can go slightly lower (may nuisance blow)

2. **Voltage Rating**
   - Must be equal or higher
   - 24V, 120V, 250V, 600V
   - Higher is OK

3. **Physical Size**
   - Must fit holder
   - Blade, glass, cartridge
   - Measure if unsure

4. **Type**
   - Fast-acting or time-delay
   - Match original type
   - Motor circuits need time-delay

### Common HVAC Fuse Sizes:

**Control Circuits:**
- 3 amp blade (most common)
- 5 amp blade
- 3 amp glass tube

**Transformers:**
- 3-5 amp secondary
- 1-3 amp primary (varies)

**Equipment Disconnect:**
- Match equipment rating
- Usually 20-60 amps
- Cartridge style

## Fuse FAQs

**Q: Can I use a higher amp fuse?**
A: NO! Never exceed original rating. Defeats protection, fire hazard.

**Q: Why does my 3 amp fuse keep blowing?**
A: Short circuit in 24V wiring, bad thermostat, shorted control, or failed component. Must diagnose and fix.

**Q: Fast-acting or time-delay?**
A: Match original. Time-delay for motors, fast-acting for sensitive electronics.

**Q: Can I bypass the fuse temporarily?**
A: NEVER! Fire and shock hazard. Always use proper fuse.

**Q: Where is my furnace fuse?**
A: Usually on control board or inline with transformer. Some in separate holder.

**Q: How do I test a fuse?**
A: Continuity test with multimeter. Good fuse shows continuity, blown shows open.
