## Thermostat Wire

### Wire Gauge & Conductors:

**Standard: 18 Gauge (18 AWG)**

| Wire Type | Conductors | Common Use |
|-----------|------------|------------|
| 18/2 | 2 wires | Simple heat only |
| 18/3 | 3 wires | Heat + fan |
| 18/4 | 4 wires | Heat/cool, no C wire |
| 18/5 | 5 wires | Standard heat/cool + C |
| 18/6 | 6 wires | Heat pump |
| 18/7 | 7 wires | 2-stage + C |
| 18/8 | 8 wires | Full-feature, smart stat |

### Wire Color Codes:

**Standard Colors:**
- **Red (R)** - 24V power
- **White (W)** - Heat
- **Yellow (Y)** - Cooling
- **Green (G)** - Fan
- **Blue (C)** - Common
- **Orange (O)** - Heat pump reversing
- **Brown (B)** - Alt reversing or 2nd heat

### Selecting Wire:

**For Basic Systems:**
- Heat only: 18/2 minimum
- Heat + AC: 18/4 minimum (18/5 recommended)
- Heat pump: 18/6 minimum

**For Smart Thermostats:**
- Need C wire (common)
- 18/5 minimum
- 18/8 for maximum flexibility

**Best Practice:**
- Always run more wires than needed
- Future-proof installation
- 18/8 allows any thermostat

## Wire Connectors

### Wire Nuts

**By Size/Color:**
- **Gray** - 22-16 AWG, 2-3 wires
- **Blue** - 22-14 AWG, 2-3 wires
- **Orange** - 22-14 AWG, 2-4 wires
- **Yellow** - 18-12 AWG, 3-4 wires
- **Red** - 18-10 AWG, 2-5 wires
- **Tan** - 14-8 AWG, 2-4 wires

**HVAC Uses:**
- Orange - Most 18 AWG stat wire
- Red - Higher gauge connections
- Yellow - Multiple 18 AWG wires

### Crimp Connectors

**Types:**
- **Butt splices** - Inline connections
- **Ring terminals** - Screw terminals
- **Spade terminals** - Quick-disconnect
- **Quick-disconnects** - Push-on/off

**Sizing:**
- Match wire gauge
- Color coded:
  - Red: 22-18 AWG
  - Blue: 16-14 AWG
  - Yellow: 12-10 AWG

### Specialty Connectors

**HVAC Specific:**
- Molex connectors
- Furnace harness plugs
- Motor connectors
- Control board plugs
- OEM-specific terminals

## Installation Tips

### Thermostat Wire:

**Best Practices:**
- Run through interior walls
- Avoid parallel to high voltage
- Use proper support/clips
- Leave service loop at both ends
- Label wires at each end

**Avoid:**
- Stapling too tight
- Sharp bends
- Running with high voltage
- Outdoor exposure
- Undersizing wire count

### Wire Connections:

**Proper Wire Nut Installation:**
1. Strip wires 1/2" to 3/4"
2. Hold wires parallel
3. Insert into nut
4. Twist clockwise until tight
5. Tug test each wire
6. No exposed copper visible

**Crimp Connector Installation:**
1. Strip wire to match barrel length
2. Insert fully into barrel
3. Crimp with proper tool
4. Tug test
5. Insulate if needed

## Wire Troubleshooting

### Common Problems:

**Open Circuit:**
- Broken wire
- Loose connection
- Bad splice
- Test continuity end-to-end

**Short Circuit:**
- Pinched wire
- Damaged insulation
- Wire touching metal
- Staple through wire

**Intermittent:**
- Loose connection
- Cracked wire (moves with vibration)
- Corroded terminal
- Check all connections

## Wire & Connector FAQs

**Q: How many wires do I need?**
A: Heat only: 2. Heat/AC: 5. Heat pump: 6-8. Smart thermostat: 5 minimum (need C wire).

**Q: Can I add a wire to existing cable?**
A: Difficult. Options: Run new cable, use add-a-wire device, or run separate C wire.

**Q: What size wire nut for thermostat wire?**
A: Orange wire nuts work best for 18 AWG thermostat wire.

**Q: Should I use crimp or wire nuts?**
A: Wire nuts for most HVAC. Crimps for vibration-prone areas or when required by code.

**Q: My wire is damaged. Can I splice it?**
A: Yes, use appropriate connector. For long runs, consider replacing entire wire.
